[ARCHIVED] Prescription Drug Drop Box now available 24/7

June 7, 2016, Canton, MI – Due to the overwhelming response observed during the Drug Enforcement Agency’s semi-annual Prescription Drug Drop Box program, the Canton Police Department has installed a permanent drop box for individuals to dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs. The box is located in the lobby of the police department, and is accessible to the public every day, all day.

Restrictions to the drop box include pills only—no liquids or needles. Drop offs are anonymous and free of charge.

“Canton’s prescription drug drop box comes at a time of heightened awareness on the potential safety and health hazards created by improper drug disposal or leaving unused prescription medication in the home,” says Community Relations Officer Patty Esselink.

Rates of prescription drug abuse are alarmingly high, and studies show a direct correlation to opioid addiction. The majority of abused prescription drugs are often obtained unknowingly from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, residents are aware their former methods of disposal—either flushing down the toilet or throwing in the trash—are no longer acceptable and pose potential safety and health hazards.
For questions, contact Community Relations Officer Patty Esselink at 734/394-5194, or the Canton Police Department at 734/394-5400.
