[ARCHIVED] Canton's Fellows Creek Golf Club Recognized for Environmental Excellence

Jason McIntyre, Fellows Creek Golf Course Superintendent, led the effort to obtain sanctuary designation on the property and is being recognized for Environmental Stewardship by Audubon International.

"Fellows Creek Golf Course has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property," said Doug Bechtel, Executive Director at Audubon International. " Fellows Creek Golf Course is one of twelve golf courses in Michigan and 911 in the world to be designated as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary."

This certification is presented by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System (ACSS), the educational division of Audubon International.

"To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas," explained Bechtel. These categories include: Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management.

The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, endorsed by the United States Golf Association, provides information and guidance to help golf courses preserve and enhance wildlife habitat and protect natural resources. Golf courses from the United States, Africa, Australia, Canada, Central America, Europe, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia have achieved certification in the program.

"Designation as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary is an accomplishment to be proud of for the Canton community.” said Debbie Bilbrey-Honsowetz, Canton Leisure Services Director. "The national recognition received by Fellows Creek Golf Club demonstrates their effectiveness in creating naturalized areas on the golf course, which provide valuable habitats for local and migratory wildlife in the area. It also shows their increased efficiencies in energy, water, pesticides and fertilizer usage."

Fellows Creek Golf Club, located at 2936 S. Lotz in Canton, MI has three unique nine-hole layouts with each nine measuring more than 3,200 yards in length. These 27 holes were co-designed by one of Michigan's most renowned golfing architects, W. Bruce Matthews, and his son, Jerry Matthews. Under the management of Billy Casper Golf, Fellows Creek Golf Club also boasts a clubhouse that features a restaurant/banquet facility that can hold up to 300 guests for golf outings, showers, or wedding receptions. In addition, a scenic outdoor wedding ceremony area is also available.
