October 29, 2015, Canton, MI – The Canton Police Department is taking steps to help ensure a safe Halloween weekend for Canton residents. On October 30 and 31, the department will be fully-staffed, patrolling neighborhoods and business areas. Police officers will continue to maintain a visible presence throughout the holiday weekend.
“By placing extra attention in the neighborhoods, we hope to deter mischievous behavior as well as provide a safe environment for children out trick or treating,” says Special Services Lieutenant Craig Wilsher.
Parents are encouraged to create a safe Halloween experience for their children by following some simple safety tips:
1. Children should wear well-fitted costumes and shoes to avoid tripping.
2. Parents should ensure children’s vision is not hindered by masks or other costume pieces.
3. Swords, knives, and similar accessories of the costume variety should be short, soft and
flexible.
4. Children should wear something reflective, or carry a flashlight to be easily seen.
5. Children should walk in groups, or with a trusted adult, no one should go out alone.
6. Stay on the sidewalk, avoid walking in the street and between parked cars.
7. Stay clear of lit candles burning in pumpkins on porches and walkways.
8. Older kids going out in a group should plan a safe route, and make sure a parent is aware of
the plan.
9. Parents should check the candy and treats collected before consumption, throwing away anything that appears to be open or unwrapped.
Suspicious activity should be reported to the police department by calling 734/394-5400.
In addition, police officers have recently conducted both parolee and registered sex offender checks on individuals living in Canton to verify their addresses, and acknowledge their presence in the community.
