Canton will once again focus a spotlight on arts and culture during the 5th annual Canton Acts of Culture Week, which is presented by the Canton Commission for Culture, Arts and Heritage and sponsored by Canton Community Foundation. This special week, presented by the Canton Commission for Culture, Arts and Heritage and sponsored by Canton Community Foundation, will begin on Friday, April 24 and run through Sunday, May 3, 2015 at various community locations.
Some of the many goals of Canton's Acts of Culture Week include: showcasing community cultural resources and partnerships; celebrating diverse culture offerings; raising awareness of arts accessibility; instilling an appreciation of local arts organizations; and promoting the arts and heritage in and around the Canton community.
In celebration of the arts, a variety of events will be held, some of which include:
• The Michigan Philharmonic’s performance of "Middle Eastern Fusion Fest," featuring beautiful music of the Middle East such as Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade: The Young Prince and The Young Princess," Oztoprak's "Zuzdil Samai" and "Arabian Waltz" by Rabih Abou-Khalil. Don't miss special guest Michael Ibrahim, Music Director of the National Arab Orchestra, who will also be in attendance. Bring the entire family on Sunday, May 3 at 2 p.m. to The Village Theater at Cherry Hill. •The 5th Annual Ladies Dillenbeck Art Exhibition Reception at D & M Art Studio, located at 8691 N. Lilley Road, on Sunday, April 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. Hosted by Sharon Lee Dillenbeck, owner/operator of D & M Art Studio, this exhibition will once again assemble recent original works of art including Dillenbeck's work and those of her daughters Erin and Kristin, and her sister Donna Knight. Additional works will also be on display from Marilyn Meredith, Vivian Hewitt, Elizabeth Gullikson, Deana Salhaney, Kyla Suchy, Teresa Davis and Kay Masini. •Canton Concert Band's Spring Concert, "Flight of Fancy," will feature pieces that will take you on an imaginary flight through the sky and will range from Rossano Galante’s beautiful "Beyond the Horizon" and his majestic "Mt. Everest" to Samuel Hazo’s exciting composition "Rush." This special performance will be held on Saturday, May 2 at 7 p.m. at The Village Theater at Cherry Hill, located at 50400 Cherry Hill Road, Canton, MI 48187. •Canton Club 55+ presents a "Cinco de Mayo Celebration" on Saturday, May 9 from 6-10 pm in the Summit on the Park's Walnut Room, located at 46000 Summit Parkway. This event features a delicious "south of the border" buffet, cash bar and amazing entertainment. Plus, Biggby Coffee is sponsoring a five-member Tejano band, Grupo Fantasia. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Children's Center and the Michigan Veteran's Foundation.
