The Gallery at Cherry Hill is now accepting entries for the 29th Annual Canton Fine Arts Exhibition, which will be on display September 26 - October 28, 2023. Entries for this distinguished exhibition are currently being accepted through August 4, 2023. Michigan artists are encouraged to enter online.
“We’re thrilled to be able to bring back the Canton Fine Arts Exhibition this year to provide a unique opportunity for Michigan artists to publicly display their works and reach a large audience in the Canton community,” said Canton Performing Arts Coordinator Ben Frick. “This exhibition draws works from both emerging and well-established artists and showcases a broad range of artistic styles and interpretations.”
All media is accepted for this outstanding exhibition. Only digital image files will be accepted for review online at www.cantonvillagetheater.org. Paintings and hangings should not exceed five feet wide or six feet high, 40 pounds in weight and must be properly and appropriately framed and prepared for hanging. Sculpture dimensions must not exceed 5’ x 5’ x 6’ and 200 pounds in weight. Original works of art must have been completed in the last three years. A non-refundable entry fee of $20 for each submitted piece is required.
The competition will award $1,950 in cash prizes: Best of Show $750; Second Place $500; Third Place $300; two Honorable Mentions of $100 each; and four Merit Awards of $50 each. Juried result notification will be emailed by August 20, 2023.
This year’s distinguished juror will be Jeff Cancelosi, who is an artist, curator and photographer who is widely recognized for his ongoing creation of photographic portraits of artists -- national, regional and local -- working or showing work in southeast Michigan. His artworks have been juried into shows across the United States by curators from the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the dia Art Foundation of New York, the Berkeley Art Museum, and Cranbrook Academy of Art, as well as by artists such as Jim Dine, Brian Rutenberg, Andres Serrano, Mel Chin and Charles McGee. Before turning to fine art, Jeff worked as a graphic designer, including as art director of JCPenney.com. He has curated numerous shows in the Detroit area and served for a number of years as chair of the Exhibitions Committee chair and as a board member of the Detroit Artists Market (DAM), the oldest non-profit art gallery in Detroit. He is an active volunteer with ArtWorks Detroit, serving on the board and recognized in 2020 by Matrix Human Services with a Distinguished Volunteer award. Jeff is also an adjunct faculty member at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. Jeff holds a B.F.A. in graphic design from the University of Cincinnati School of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning, as well as a B.A. in radio/television, with a minor in photography, from Southern Methodist University.
A reception will be held for the selected artists on October 12 from 6:00-8:30 p.m., with a special program starting at 7:00 p.m. The Village Theater has exhibition hours throughout the year (except for major holidays), Monday - Tuesday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Thursday-Friday from 4-8 p.m., by appointment, and during all public performances. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
