NOVEMBER 5, 2019 ELECTION

To the qualified electors of Canton Township:

Notice is hereby given that a special election will be held in Canton Township on Tuesday, November 5, 2019. The polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

At the following locations:

Precinct 20, 33, 40 - Summit on the Park - 46000 Summit Parkway, Canton, MI 48188 (Precinct 33 moved to Summit on the Park for this election only).

Please take notice that the Van Buren School district will be voting on the following proposal as presented and listed below:

Shall Van Buren Public Schools, Wayne and Washtenaw Counties, Michigan, borrow the sum of not to exceed Thirty-Five Million Four Hundred Ninety Thousand Dollars ($35,490,000) and issue its general obligation unlimited tax bonds therefor, in one or more series, for the purpose of:

Erecting, furnishing, and equipping a new early childhood center; remodeling, furnishing and refurnishing, and equipping and re-equipping existing school buildings; acquiring and installing instructional technology in school buildings; and preparing, developing, improving, and equipping playgrounds, athletic fields, and sites?

The following is for informational purposes only:

The estimated millage that will be levied for the proposed bonds in 2020 is .78 mill ($0.78 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) for a -0- mills net increase over the prior year's levy. The maximum number of years the bonds of any series may be outstanding, exclusive of any refunding, is thirty (30) years. The estimated simple average annual millage anticipated to be required to retire this bond debt is .87 mill ($0.87 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation).

The school district does not expect to borrow from the State to pay debt service on the bonds. The total amount of qualified bonds currently outstanding is $54,495,000. The total amount of qualified loans currently outstanding is $0.00. The estimated computed millage rate may change based on changes in certain circumstances.

(Pursuant to State law, expenditure of bond proceeds must be audited, and the proceeds cannot be used for repair or maintenance costs, teacher, administrator or employee salaries, or other operating expenses.)

Absentee ballots are available for all elections; registered voters may contact the local clerk to obtain an application for an absent voter ballot.

To comply with the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), voting instructions will be available in audio format and in Braille. Arrangements for obtaining the instructions in these alternative formats can be made by contacting the township clerk in advance of the election. All polling locations are accessible for voters with disabilities.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC ACCURACY TESTING

Canton Township will test the tabulation equipment and programming to be used in the above stated election which is to be held on November 5th, 2019. This testing is considered an open meeting and the public is encouraged to attend. Testing will occur at 1150 S. Canton Center Rd, Canton, MI 48188 in the Clerk’s Office. Testing will take place at 12:00 p.m. on October 15th.

NOTICE OF VOTER REGISTRATION

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that any qualified elector of Canton Township who is not already registered, may register to vote at the office of the Township Clerk; the office of the County Clerk; a Secretary of State branch office, or other designated state agency. Registration forms can be obtained at mi.gov/vote and mailed to the Township Clerk. Voters who are already registered may update their registration at www.expressSOS.com.

The last day to register in any manner other than in-person with the local clerk is Monday, October 21, 2019

After this date, anyone who qualifies as an elector may register to vote in person with proof of residency (MCL 168.492) at the Canton Township Clerk’s office, located at 1150 S Canton Center, Canton, MI 48188 at the following times:

• Regular business hours: Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

• Saturday, November 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

• Election Day, Tuesday November 5th from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
