ORIGINAL: January 28, 2015, Canton, MI – At approximately 4:00 a.m. the Canton Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire in Wagon Wheel Mobile Home Park. Initial reports indicated a neighbor placed a 911 call stating flames were visible.
Upon arrival, fire units reported a portion of the mobile home was already engulfed in flames. An aggressive attack was initiated on the fire with firefighters entering the back of the home for a primary search where they encountered heavy fire conditions. Due to the rapidly deteriorating conditions and the instability of the structure, firefighters exited the home and transitioned into a defensive attack.
After the fire was extinguished a portion of the roof was removed to gain entry for a secondary search with fire crews locating one victim. The initial investigation reveals there were no working smoke detectors in the home.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Canton Fire Department's Fire Investigation Unit.
