On Saturday, June 2, 2018, area residents are invited to participate in the Fasting 5K Run and Walk, which will be at the end of a long 16-hour fast during Ramadan in Canton, MI. This walk/run is open to everyone in the community, and will include participants from various faiths. Proceeds from this event will benefit The B.L.O.C.K. Youth & Teen Center.
Ten cities and hundreds of athletes will embrace the spirit of the month by fasting, fundraising, and building community through this annual 5K event. The Detroit area Fasting 5K will be held in Canton, with a starting point at the Muslim Community of Western Suburbs, located at 40440 Palmer Road in Canton. This fundraising event is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
"The B.L.O.C.K. Youth & Teen Center is thrilled to be one of this year's recipient of proceeds from this annual Detroit area event," said Laura Mortier, CPRP, Recreation Specialist. "We are grateful that Fasting 5K participants are choosing to hold this fundraising event after observing a long day of abstaining from food and water during the holy month of Ramadan. This shows just how dedicated they are to making a difference in our community.”
Since its inception in 2013, Fasting 5K has raised over $250,000 to support local charities based in the participating cities. Fasting 5K was created to further general acts of goodness during Ramadan, which is a holy month celebrated by the Islamic faith, where healthy Muslims forgo food and water from sunrise to sunset.
Proceeds from this event are annually directed towards youth development and educational programs. This year, event organizers are working with organizations providing resources for youth safety against violence, and have selected The B.L.O.C.K. Youth & Teen Center to receive a portion of the Detroit area proceeds. The B.L.O.C.K. Youth & Teen Center, located at 1150 S. Canton Center Road in Canton, MI, provides a fun, teen-friendly environment where students from ages 11-17 can participant in supervised afterschool programs, social events, and activities.
